Thirteen Canadians were arrested for civil disobedience at 6 p.m. after sitting down on the tracks in front of an oncoming coal train in White Rock. Their vigil began at midnight, but Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF)cancelled many of its scheduled runs in anticipation of the protest.

  • Climate activists arrested at behest of Warren Buffett's BNSF railway over coal blockade

Coal is a likely target for climate stability advocates because it has the highest greenhouse gas emissions per unit of energy of all fossil fuels and because there is enough economically available coal to trigger run away climate change. Over eight million tons of coal from Powder River Basin, Montana traveled through the lower BC mainland in 2011.  BNSF transports the coal through White Rock to the Westshore terminals. BNSF is owned by Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc.

I'm glad you people were arrested. I just wish the police had recommended criminal charges for violating the court order and mischief. you all should be in jail after sullying my town's reputation.

I am very proud that people who know the facts about the dire environmental consequences of our continuing reliance on coal burning are willing to engage in peaceful disobedience to emphasize that point.

Kriss's comment is simple concise and resumes my own thoughts. I am also very proud of these people and their commitment for us all. It is the contrary, from our governments, that is a shame. I was too far away, in Germany, but I wish I had been there to sit with them.

«highest greenhouse gas emissions per unit of energy of all fossil fuels» not being something many seem to understand, they are the voice for all beings to have A future. Including those who won't hear.
